What are cloves?

Cloves are small dried flower buds. These buds come from the clove tree. The taste can be compared to cinnamon, but the taste is stronger and can be described as slightly spicy. The cloves are as shown, but you can also buy them ground. For the best taste experience, cloves are usually combined with cinnamon and nutmeg.

And the best part is that they are packed with vitamins and nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin A and potassium. But that’s not the only benefit of cloves. They offer additional benefits that you may not be aware of.

1. Pain Relief

Cloves have been used to relieve pain for centuries.

Especially when people have a toothache. This is due to a substance called eugenol, which gives cloves their distinctive smell. And eugenol has narcotic properties. Cloves can therefore relieve pain. Especially for toothache.

2.Antibacterial

Another benefit is the antibacterial properties of cloves. This means they can stop the growth of bacteria or other microorganisms. Clove oil helps fight certain bacteria that cause diarrhea or fatigue. People who use a mouthwash that contains cloves have less bacteria in their mouth and therefore less plaque.

3.Pr otect the Liver

Cloves contain antioxidants (including eugenol) that help prevent liver failure. Eating a dish with cloves improves the health of your kidneys. But eat in moderation! Eating a lot of cloves can damage your liver due to excess eugenol.

4. Blood Sugar

A few years ago, scientists studied the effects of nigericin. Nigerian is a substance found in cloves. Scientists have been trying to figure out what effect this substance might have on human cells.  And it turned out that cells that produce insulin started producing more of it because of the nigericin. And insulin regulates our blood sugar levels. That means that cloves can help regulate your levels of blood sugar too!

So the next time you’re making dinner, add some cloves! Not only will it add flavor, but it might also give you some surprising health benefits.
